A little bit of history…
Poland share the best result from a debut entry alongside Serbia &
Montenegro – coming second on their
first go at Eurovision. Recently, Poland
is another country that’s seen good and bad times. In 2003 they came 7th
with their song for peace, but 2004 saw them closer to the bottom of the scoreboard than the top, and in 2005 failed to qualify
from the Semi with a tantalising 11th place. Consequently, they find
themselves in the 2006 Semi-Final.
Singer & Song
Ich Troje I Follow My Heart
Making a Eurovision comeback after just three
years, Ich Troje have doubled their numbers and upped the stakes with their really contemporary entry this year. I Follow My Heart is a great song, catchy and eurovisionesque. Ich
Troje are experienced performers, and have brought together ex-members of the group and rapper ‘The Real McCoy’
to sing the song. Although the songs good, it is plagued by a lot of different
languages and although the performers are experienced, I can’t help but think that six of them will end up a bit of
a mess. I think this will have a negative effect on Poland’s chances, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
Prediction
Unlikely to Qualify: 16th-20th
in Semi-Final
As much as I like this song, the performers
do have difficulty coming across together on the recorded version of the song – so I don’t have high hopes for
how this will sound live. On top of that, the national selection performance
looked awkward and the group just didn’t look well together. I don’t
think Poland will qualify this year, I
just don’t think it’s all going to come together live.
Prediction after
Semi-Final
Poland failed to qualify.
Review of the Eurovision
Performance
After being very apprehensive, the Polish
entry certainly was an enjoyable one, and missed out on a place in the Final by just 6 points, coming 11th behind Macedonia's
10th place. There was quite alot going on on stage, but the camera angles were used to great effect and only focussed
on the important parts of each particular stage of the song - making everything look a whole lot tidier to those of us who
were watching at home compared to those who were actually at the contest in Athens. The singing was fine -
nothing special but there wasn't much horrifcally wrong either. The costumes were great - I just think that green hair
was a little out of place though, but I think Ich Troje did well and Poland should be proud of them despite the fact they
failed to make it to the Final. As for my prediction - although I didn't think Ich Troje would qualify, I didn't expect
them to do quite so well as they did, so I guess I'm wrong again! Oh dear!
