A little bit of history...
Iceland is another one of Eurovision's less successful nations. In their earlier days they failed to achieve well,
and even recently their results have been rather touch and go. 1999 saw them at their highest, coming in second place
with Selma's 'All Out Of Luck' - and she proved to be just that. She missed out to the wonderful Charlotte Nilsson,
another one of my fave songs, deserving of the victory it received. 2000, they had a great tune, but could only muster
up 12th and in 2001 came last with what I thought was one of the best songs of the Contest that year. Back in 2003 saw
them secure 8th place with 'Open Your Heart' by Birgitta - a wonderful song which gave the show a strong opening. 2004's
Jonsi was a male ballad amid lots of other boring male ballads and scored very poorly, so Iceland found themselves in the
2005 Semi-Final. Everyone was delighted to hear Selma was back to try and secure Iceland's first victory, or at least
try and get Iceland into the 2006 Final, but with the perfect performance and great song, Europe still didn't take to it and
she failed to qualify, so Iceland find themselves in the 2006 Semi-Final.
Singer & Song
Silvia Night Congratulations!
If ever Iceland gave themselves a chance of winning Eurovision - this is it. It's another one of my faves in this
Contest. The song is a tongue-in-cheek entry, where Sylvia sings about herself and how she's going to win the contest,
inviting all the boys and girls around the world to meet next year in Iceland. The song is really very good and enjoyable,
one that you can sing along to and have a bit of a giggle at (without finding it too offensive). It's simply there to
be enjoyed. Silvia is sure to provide a wonderfully camp performance with crazy costumes and interesting gimmicks and
is sure to bring the song to life with a show-stopping performance.
Prediction
Definate Qualifier: 3rd-5th in Semi, 8th-10th in Final
Eurovision 2007 in Rejkjavic? I wouldn't be surprised but it's not as safe a bet as Eurovision 2007 in Athens or
Berlin. The English version of Silvia's song is wonderful, and will greatly enhance the song's chances. As well
as this, Silvia is closing the Semi-Final, the perfect position for such a song to draw. She'll definately stay in the
audience's mind with her eye catching performance and enjoyable song. I'd be surprised if Europe didn't take to this,
so I'm saying this is bound to qualify, but not win.
Prediction after Semi-Final
After insulting the Greek nation by calling their technicians 'f**king amateurs' when she was onstage, Silvia got booed
both before and after her song. Europe failed to take to her comedy act, not surprising since South Eastern European
countries tend to take Eurovision rather seriously. She didn't qualify.
Review of the Eurovision Performance
Things weren't looking too good from the offset for poor Silvia - but she certainly didn't do herself any favours - even
if she was supposed to be taken with a pinch of salt. In a prior rehearsal Silvia did insult the sound guys, calling
them 'f**king amateurs'. I personally thought it was quite funny - she is a comic character after all, but the Greek
took it to heart and Silvia was booed both before and after her performance. The fact that the Lithuanian entry was
also alot better than many expected didn't bode too well for Iceland either. Based on this, their chances weren't great
- were the voting public really going to take to someone who was being booed? I don't think this was the most important
factor - she did come 13th - but it certainly didn't help her. The performance was a bit all over the place. It
looked good but there was almost too much going on. Silvia's vocal wasn't great either - and hence I feel the song lost
alot as it is really catchy. By the end of the song, when the impact was really needed, Silvia came across as exhausted,
and simply couldn't give her all to the singing side of it. Had she have been able to do this, I'm sure Iceland would
have fared better and made it to the final, but these things happen and unfortunately Silvia didn't deliver as well as she
should have. As for my prediction - wrong again!!
