A little bit of history...
Denmark have had an interesting run at Eurovision over the past few years, doing very well (3rd in the Semi, 9th overall
in 2005, 2nd in 2001, winning in 2000) and very poorly (last in 2002, failed to qualify in 2004). They've won twice,
in 1963 and 2000. Last year, their qualification was a big surprise, with what I still think was a poor entry.
Therefore 9th place and direct qualification to this year's final, in my opinion, is a heck of a lot more than they deserve,
but maybe they can make up for it...
Singer & Song
Sidsel Ben Semmane Twist of Love
I think I'm one of the few people on Earth who likes this song. I think it's an upbeat, catchy number with a memorable
and entertaining chorus and performance. Sidsel is the youngest competitor this year at 17, but does show some star
quality on stage and should do the song justice on the night. Europe will like or loathe this, but do not discount this
- Denmark could do surprisingly well.
Prediction
16th-18th in Final
Another one I don't quite know what to make of. Denmark won't be last, but whether or not they can do well is a
tricky one. They've got the neighbours, and a song which people will pick up their phones and vote for, but I don't
see any "douze points" on the cards. It's likely Denmark will make it to the middle of the road in lots of countries
voting, either just making the top ten and getting lots of 1's and 2's, or just missing out and not receiving anything at
all. 16th-18th is a fair reflection of how they could do at worst, but don't be surprised to see this in the top ten,
I won't be.
Prediction after Semi-Final
16th-18th in Final
I think the competition's too strong in the Final for Europe to take to this. It will get votes and I don't think
last place is on the cards here, rather, something similar to what I predicted before, 16th-18th, but it could go either way.
Review of the Eurovision Performance
How cool was this?! I thoroughly enjoyed the Danish entry this year, and it all came together very well onstage, the
break dancing, the clapping, the whole twist in general worked really well. So why did they only finish 18th? Like so many
of the songs directly qualified, I think this suffered from being one of the first 9 to perform, and songs up early usually
don't fare that well at all. As well as this, the competition from the Semi was strong, and she was followed by Russia's
inexplicable 2nd place, so maybe the Danes simply lost out on these misfortunes. As for the prediction - turns out I was
right! Yay!
