To combat their recent run of poor results, Iceland staged a very lengthy selection process with weeks of qualification
heats. Eventually, they ended up selecting dance act Eurobandid with song 'This Is My Life'.

This Is My Life
A Little Bit of History...
Iceland are another one of Eurovision's less successful nations. In their earlier days they failed to achieve
well, and even recently their results have been rather touch and go. 1999 saw them at their highest, coming in second
place with Selma's 'All Out Of Luck' - and she proved to be just that. She missed out to the wonderful Charlotte Nilsson,
another one of my fave songs, deserving of the victory it received. 2000, they had a great tune, but could only muster
up 12th and in 2001 came last with what I thought was one of the best songs of the Contest that year. Back in 2003 saw
them secure 8th place with 'Open Your Heart' by Birgitta - a wonderful song which gave the show a strong opening. 2004's
Jonsi was a male ballad amid lots of other boring male ballads and scored very poorly, so Iceland found themselves in the
2005 Semi-Final. Everyone was delighted to hear Selma was back to try and secure Iceland's first victory, or at least
try and get Iceland into the 2006 Final, but with the perfect performance and great song, Europe still didn't take to it and
she failed to qualify. So Iceland found themselves in the 2006 Semi-Final and hopes were very high (and rightly so) with novelty
entry Silvia Night, but her elaborate performance wasn't enough to make up for a dodgy vocal and angry Greek crowd, and she
consequently failed to qualify. 2007 saw a fantastic rock ballad, which stunned many when it finished 13th - higher
than was expected. This year however, Iceland are desperate to at least make the Final, they certainly deserve to by
now.
Singer & Song
Eurobandid This Is My Life
Iceland
staged one of the most extensive Eurovision selections a country has ever seen in order to choose the right singers and song.Despite being a firm fan favourite, I have been a bit wary of whether or not it can
break the top ten.The last time Iceland
came top ten was in 2003, when they interestingly were up first, so that should be a good omen if anything, kicking off the
proceedings in the second semi in Belgrade. There has been a lot of negative press surrounding the entry, having sacked their dancers in lieu of backing
singers – something I didn’t think was overly necessary. While the
dancers presence managed to seem forced (on a dance track, I know), the two singers of Eurobandid have sang to perfection
each time I’ve seen a live performance, and the song is an uplifting, catchy song with a great impact.I wouldn’t be surprised to see this qualify and it certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing if it
did – it’s a great track, sung and performed well, but despite the hype from fans I wouldn’t be surprised
either to see this manage to just miss out.
