Eurovision 2006

It seems Estonia have jumped on the 'novelty-too-far' bandwaggon, and are sending Kreisiraadio with 'Leto Svet'.

A Little Bit of History...

Estonia hold the title of being the first ever Eastern European country to win at Eurovision.  Their victory came in 2001, on just their 7th attempt.  Estonia, to me, have always entered good songs, and have been duly recognised when it comes to the voting (4th in 2000, 3rd in 2002), and left behind (failure to qualify four years on the trot: 2004-2007).  Indeed, since the Semi Final has been introduced, they've yet to make it through.  Maybe things are set to change in 2008...

Singer & Song

Estonia, like many other countries, have experienced no success whatsoever since the new format was introduced – 2002 was the last time they saw a top ten finish.  I think that their entries, as a whole, have been some of the best we’ve seen, and it’s disappointing to see a country which usually embraces Eurovision so enthusiastically fare so poorly.  Hence, it’s no surprise to see them pull the novelty trick out of the bag, and come up with something which isn’t even a song, but stands out on stage.  Whether or not Estonia will do well with this, I’m not sure.  I don’t like it at all, it barely resembles a song – but the slight tune that is there is a catchy one, and despite the sheer ugliness of the three middle-aged male lead singers, the girls with the flags tend to give it some sort of a lift, and help it to remain memorable.  Many have compared this to Lithuania’s 2006 triumph, ‘We Are The Winners’, which was rated poorly by the fans and even got booed on the night.  Nevertheless, they pulled through, with some charisma and a rather grating likeability factor, and I fear the same thing may happen here.  There are however, several things which may prevent this from happening: firstly, the song is sung in Estonian, and isn’t very universal, secondly, there isn’t quite so much charm about it as ‘We Are The Winners’, and thirdly, they’ve pulled a very poor draw, unlike Lithuania in 2006.  It’s bound to be a candidate for qualification, but I hope it doesn’t and we see some of the better entries in the Final.
