Eurovision 2006

Ruslan Alehno was selected for Belarus with the song 'Hasta La Vista'.  Since the National Final, the song has been reproduced to a much more contemporary sounding track.

A Little Bit of History...

Belarus were one of the four countries to make their debut in Eurovision in 2004 when the Semi-Final was introduced, and it hasn't been smooth sailing.  Alexandr & Konstantin were their first entry, and it certainly was a delightful one, but unfortunately, Europe didn't take to their simple quirkiness and they could only muster up 10 points, and finish two from the bottom.  In 2005, hopes were high with Angelica Agurbash and her song Love Me Tonight but unfortunately, she seemed to forget how to sing that particular night, and hence, could only muster up 13th place.  So there was alot of pressure on 2006's Polina Smolova, who again, failed to qualify, and only managed one from the bottom, with a measly ten points yet again.  2007 however, brought a much anticipated success, with one of the best songs in the competition they qualified with ease and finished 6th overall.  Belarus are reportedly very unhappy to have to participate in the Semi-Final once again after such a successful year.

This is almost ‘Work Your Magic’ part two, which I will never think is a bad thing.  The song has really benefited from the rework and is no longer a contender for the dreaded ‘nul points’ in the second semi – it was certainly the weakest song.  The new rockier edge is wonderful, and it sounds so contemporary.  The lyrics aren’t bad either, and Ruslan’s vocal, though not perfect, is on par with Dima from last year.  Despite the positive (and much needed) improvement, I’m still not entirely sure about the potential regarding Eurovision success – it’s a good tune, but there are other entries which may outshine it in the semi.  I like it, and will enjoy watching it in Belgrade, so I guess it wouldn’t be such a bad thing if it were to do well.
