Eurovision 2006

In another strong effort to banish their late reputation at Eurovision, Switzerland are sending DJ Bobo to Helsinki.  He will perform Vampires Are Alive.

A Little Bit Of History...

Switzerland have won Eurovision twice, in 1956 (the first ever competition!) and 1982 (with world famous Celine Dion).  Their luck of late hasn't been great when it comes to Eurovision, with a bunch of dismal results in the early 00's cumulating with a big fat zero (nul points) in the 2004 Semi-Final.  Fortunately (and deservedly) Switzerland did much better in 2005 with the imported estonian rock-chick group Vanilla Ninja, singing 'Cool Vibes'.  One of my personal favourites last year, Switzerland finished a comfortable 8th in both the Final and Semi-Final, and at one point in the voting looked as though they were going to win the whole thing.  So for a change, Switzerland were qualified to the 2006 Final, and went for broke with super group six4one singing some good old Eurovision smaltz 'If We All Give A Little'.  Unfortunately Eurovision didn't take to it and they had to satisfy themselves with 17th place - meaning Switzerland must once again participate in the Semi-Final in 2007.

Fantastic!! Switzerland send another great song to Eurovision!  The Swiss seem to be one of the most under-rated countries in the Eurovision Song Contest, but after one listen to this, you could safely say that this could be about to change.  If this doesn’t put Switzerland back on the Eurovision map, I really don’t know what will.  The song, ‘Vampire’s are alive’ is a catchy eurodance number which is bound to be memorable and visually impressive onstage.  The song should appeal across the board, and DJ Bobo, who by the way is a very experienced musician, seems keen to promote the song in the less likely countries to vote for it (ie. The Balkans – surprise, surprise!!).  Based on the song, this should be strong enough to qualify, but with such an early draw nothing’s going to be a cert.  Douze points from me though.

Prediction
Semi-Final: Possible Qualifier 11th-13th
Grand Final: May Get Lost: 15th-16th

DJ Bobo gave his first live performance of 'Vampires Are Alive' in Germany last week - and it was far from impressive.  The girls vocals were flat and the whole thing seemed a mess.  The dance didn't really come together.  It is a good track, but if Switzerland don't sort this out they can kiss their qualification goodbye.  Nonetheless, it still is a good song and stands a chance, hence 11th-13th place.

Review of Eurovision Performance

Well, it seemed my inhibitions about the Swiss entry (despite loving the song) were far from null and void.  They didn’t manage to keep the whole thing as tight as it should have been - the girl simply couldn’t pull off the chorus, which, by any means was the most important part of the song.  At points she was flat, out of tune and sounded nervous with a quivering vocal.  The dance wasn’t bad, and the mannequins looked well, coupled with the beautiful candle holders making the stage look rather authentic.  However, as I’ve said, if you can’t pull off the vocal, it’s really unlikely you’ll do well in Eurovision, and I reckon this is where Switzerland stumbled.  As for my prediction, while I was being bold suggesting they wouldn’t qualify, it would seem I wasn’t bold enough and they finished a further 7 places outside my prediction bracket, so I’m wrong again!  The lesson here though is simple, and so many other entries in the past have suffered from it as well: if you can’t sing and dance at the same time, don’t.
