A Little Bit Of History...
Poland share the best result from a debut entry
alongside Serbia
& Montenegro – coming second
on their first go at Eurovision. Recently, Poland is another country that’s seen good and bad times. In 2003 they came 7th with their song for peace, but 2004 saw them closer to the bottom of the
scoreboard than the top, and in 2005 and 2006 they failed to qualify from the Semi with a tantalising 11th
place on both occasions. So consequently, Poland must participate in the Semi-Final yet again.
Singer & Song
The Jet Set Time To Party
Poland
will be represented in Helsinki buy The Jet Set singing ‘Time
To Party’. There aren’t many songs like this in this year’s
Eurovision, and I think this will bode quite well for it. A little bit of rap
and a little bit of pop didn’t do the UK
many favours last year, but this is a good tune, it’s catchy and will make a good impression. Diaspora votes will help this out - I don’t know much about the rest of the UK,
but there certainly are a lot of Polish people living and working in Northern
Ireland – and this is sure to pick up their votes.
The song’s good, but it will need a strong vocal and eye catching performance to do well, although, Poland have
sat right smack bang on the outside of the top ten (11th place in both 2005 and 2006) – so with a few more
points thrown at this it has every chance of qualification.
Prediction
Semi-Final: Unlikely to Qualify 15th-17th
Grand Final: Will Not Qualify
Poland have a tune that's very different to anything else in the Semi-Final, but I still doubt this is strong enough
to make the Final. In a field where roughly a third of the songs are going to qualify you really do need to have that
extra something, which this lacks. I do like it though, and it should be a fairly enjoyable performance - just not one
to vote for!
Prediction after Semi-Final
Poland failed to make the Final.
Review of Eurovision Performance
It was always going to be hit or miss
for Poland at this year's Eurovision,
and coming in a tantalising 11th place in the Semi for two years in a row, the stakes were high and everyone was
wondering if they would slip into the top ten. Everyone was wondering, that is,
until they had to witness the Polish performance, after which it was much of a cert that they weren’t quite going to
do better than their two previous attempts. The performance was a bit of a mess,
and the vocals on behalf of both members of the Jet Set weren’t wonderful. When
things look and sound just OK it doesn’t tend to bode very well at Eurovision, so it was no surprise to see Poland finish mid table in 14th place. In any case, predicting 15th – 17th wasn’t right, but I certainly was
close.
