A Little Bit Of History...
This is Georgia's first year at Eurovision.
Singer & Song
Sopho Khalvashi Visionary Dream
Many countries do seem to be making a
strong impression with their Eurovision debut – Albania, Moldova and Armenia to name a few. It would be very easy to see Georgia making a similar impression at this year’s Eurovision. The song has more than a similarity to Madonna’s Ray of Light, with of course
that eastern twist as you would expect from Georgia. All in all, it’s a
really good song, catchy, upbeat and it will stick in your head. The only thing
that must happen in order for this to work is the relevance of a flawless performance.
The choreography needs to be slick, the vocals bang on every note and the general appearance needs to feel hectic but
come across as organised. If Georgia can pull this off, they should do very well,
and could come close to a victory.
Prediction
Semi-Final: Will Not Qualify 19th-21st
Grand Final: Will Not Qualify
I think this will get lost amidst a bunch of mediocre songs at the start of the Semi, and this is another song with one
of those high risk factors - where the song could come across both looking and sounding a coplete shambles. As with
any entry, there's an outside chance, but I really don't think qualification is on the cards here.
Prediction after Semi-Final
Possible Top Ten: 8th - 10th
After a good performance which came across well, Georgia managed to pull through - much to my surprise (and slight dismay).
With the same performance, Sopho can easily give her country a respectable placing the top half of the scoreboard.
Review of Eurovision Performance
It was always going to be interesting
to see how the Georgian entry would end up looking and sounding like, and ultimately how they would fare. I said this was one that could go either way and would either surprise or flop miserably. As it turns out, they surprised and did well. Sopho sang particularly
well, perfectly infact and the staging worked a treat, especially with the swords dance.
Georgia managed to find that balance of organised chaos, and coupled with a great
vocal this really was one of the better entries and deserved to do as well as it did on the night. In the end, my initial prediction was wrong, with Georgia
finishing a hefty 12 places higher than I thought, they were my furthest out prediction of all the qualifiers (and probably
the whole thing). In the final I said they should just manage to make the top
ten, and they narrowly missed out, coming in in 12th place, so I guess that’s a wrong unfortunately.
