Drag Act DQ will perform for Denmark in Helsinki, singing uptempo, camp number Drama Queen

A Little Bit Of History...
Denmark have had an interesting run at Eurovision over the past few years, doing very well (3rd in the Semi, 9th overall
in 2005, 2nd in 2001, winning in 2000) and very poorly (last in 2002, failed to qualify in 2004). They've won twice,
in 1963 and 2000. In 2005, their qualification was a big surprise, with what I still think was a poor entry. Last
year, Sidsel sang her heart out, but it still wasn't enough and Denmark must participate in this year's Semi-Final.
Singer & Song
DQ Drama Queen
Denmark will be sending Drag Queen DQ to Helsinki with the camptastic tune ‘Drama Queen’.The song’s an upbeat pop track – one of only a handful of what you see is what you get songs this year
– and includes everything you’d expect from a light hearted piece of fun bubblegum pop – a good drum beat,
bright presentation, and a lively, energetic stage show. The song is one you’ll
love or hate, it’s certainly catchy and thoroughly enjoyable; although I can’t help thinking it’s slightly
bland. In comparison to this year’s Ukrainian entry (also a drag act) I
think people will be able to appreciate this on the ground that it’s fun, doesn’t take itself too seriously, and
still manages to respect the popular music event that Eurovision is.This is
one of my ‘undecideds’ this year, but I really hope they do well – I think qualification is on the cards,
but all the stops do need to be pulled out.
Prediction
Semi-Final: Definate Qualifier 3rd-5th
Grand Final: Possible Winner 3rd-5th
The only schalger, 100% camp song in it this year - so I'd definately expect big things. A colourful performance
with a good vocal should be enough to make people vote for it and propel it into the Final. It's very difficult to say
which is better, this or Verka. I think Verka's mabye the safter option so I'm gonna suggest this is in with a chance
at the top 5 - especially if the pull one of the last 3 places in the Final.
Prediction after Semi-Final
This for me was one of the best performances and more worthy of the night - but it still failed to qualify - for which
we should be upset :o(
Review of Eurovision Performance
If there was one performance I was particularly
surprised to see fail to qualify, this was it.Amidst a plethora of rock, leather
and repetitiveness, along came Denmark,
with an upbeat camp disco number using no less than three costume changes, bright pink feathers and impressive choreographer.Out of all the songs we had seen at this stage of the night, this for me was by far
the best.DQ wasn’t the best singer in the competition, but he mainly managed
to pull it off bar a few notes. To pick out holes and problems in this performance
pains me, because I sincerely enjoy it every time I watch it, nonetheless, I guess it’s my job to be fair and try to
find some sort of explanation.Firstly, as I’ve already mentioned, DQ wasn’t
the best singer in the competition and did miss a few notes and secondly, the choreography with the two boys doing the robotics
at the start wasn’t perfect either – but apart from that I can’t find anything wrong with this.It was upbeat, catchy and fun, with a very memorable performance.I can only assume that eastern Europe, particularly those former Yugoslav states, didn’t take to it and were
too caught up with their block voting to pay any attention to something which was a little more deserving of a place in the
Final (surprise, surprise, ahem!).In 19th place Denmark were very far out indeed, and my prediction was way off.I guess this just didn’t strike a chord in Europe where it seems
to matter nowadays!
